Stable isotopes in monitoring terrestrial arthropods

چکیده

Monitoring of arthropods focuses typically on changes in population and range size over time. Yet, there are a myriad other aspects that could should be monitored under the ongoing global local environmental change. Stable isotope analysis, widely employed short-term ecological studies, has potential long-term monitoring arthropods. Here we discuss use stable isotopes terrestrial arthropods, provide some empirical examples bulk tissue samples outline future directions using compound-specific analysis monitoring. Landfill Leachate Monitoring: Applications of Stable Isotopes

The most significant impact of a landfill on the surrounding environment has been consistently identified as arising from the leachate (Farquhar 1989; CAE 1992; Mulvey 1997). Therefore, environmental monitoring programmes for landfills tend to focus on the detection of leachate impacts, particularly any contamination of ground and surface water (Lee and Jones 1991; DCC 1994). Conventional monit...

Methane production in terrestrial arthropods.

We have screened more than 110 representatives of the different taxa of terrestrial arthropods for methane production in order to obtain additional information about the origins of biogenic methane. Methanogenic bacteria occur in the hindguts of nearly all tropical representatives of millipedes (Diplopoda), cockroaches (Blattaria), termites (Isoptera), and scarab beetles (Scarabaeidae), while s...

Carbon-dioxide sensing structures in terrestrial arthropods.

Sensory structures that detect atmospheric carbon dioxide have been identified and described to the subcellular level in adults of Lepidoptera, Diptera, Hymenoptera, Isoptera, Chilopoda, and Ixodidae, as well as in lepidopteran larvae. The structures are usually composed of clusters of wall-pore type sensilla that may form distinct sensory organs, often recessed in pits or capsules. In insects,...

Tissue-carbon incorporation rates in lizards: implications for ecological studies using stable isotopes in terrestrial ectotherms.

Carbon stable isotope (delta(13)C) analysis can be used to infer the origin and to estimate the flow of nutrient resources through animals and across ecological compartments. These applications require knowledge of the rates at which carbon is incorporated into animal tissues and diet-to-tissue discrimination factors (Delta(13)C). Studies of carbon dynamics in terrestrial vertebrates to date ha...

Speciation and phylogeography of Hawaiian terrestrial arthropods.

The Hawaiian archipelago is arguably the world's finest natural laboratory for the study of evolution and patterns of speciation. Arthropods comprise over 75% of the endemic biota of the Hawaiian Islands and a large proportion belongs to species radiations. We classify patterns of speciation within Hawaiian arthropod lineages into three categories: (i) single representatives of a lineage throug...
